Baltimore Homes in Highlandtown

Highlandtown grew into existence in 1866 shortly after Union troops abandoned the area following the civil war. During the early years Highlandtown was referred to as "Snake Hill". At the start of the 1900s Highlandtown began to grow into a major commercial district for street vendors to sell their goods from parked carts or vehicles alongside the street. With the growth of these street vendors came the development of variety stores and shops.

Today, much of Highlandtown's commercial real estate growth can be seen in the Arts & Entertainment District along Eastern Avenue. From the 3200 block of Eastern Avenue, and continuing east, you will find many past and present day examples. Some of these include Patterson Park Theatre, Enoch Pratt Free Library, Highlandtown Farmers Market and many other variety stores. Highlandtown today is bounded by Haven Street to the east, Baltimore Street to the north, Ellwood to the west, and Eastern Avenue to the south.
